Negatives, Positives, and Burnt Hair

April 29, 2011

No, I did not wake up to watch the Royal Wedding this morning. I am a morning person, but I don’t think 3am even qualifies as morning.  I have it on my DVR though and am super excited to go home tonight and watch Matt Lauer talk about Kate’s dress. For the record, I loved her dress. It was much simpler than I expected but the lace sleeves and deep-V added the perfect amount of detail and elegance. For the record, I loved Pippa’s dress even more.

********************

Today’s Bikram class did not start out on a good note. The woman I babysat for last night got home late so I got less sleep that I like to. I drove to class with a heavy head, and when I got there I remembered that the Groupon issued this week meant class would likely be crowded. I love the 6:30am class because it is usually only experienced yogis and there is plenty of room to spread out. But not today. Today there were people all up in my grill and girls were whispering and giggling during the quiet meditative time before class. There was no way I was going to be able to focus. I had pegged this class as a bad one before it even began.

But then as we began the first breathing exercise, my attitude shifted. I realized that instead of dwelling on the negative parts of class I could focus on the positives. An extra crowded class meant that the instructor would probably turn the fans on to cool off the room a bit. She’d also have to take some time explaining things, giving me a little extra time to catch my breath in between postures. Why not use these things to my advantage and put forth my best effort during class? I might actually do the new kids a favor by demonstrating proper technique.

Once my mindset changed, class was incredible. I’m gaining back some of the flexibility I lost during marathon training and I was able to get deep into postures that I sometimes struggle with. The instructor even used me as an example during Rabbit pose!

This morning reminded me that a negative attitude won’t bring me anywhere but down. I’ll definitely try to look for the silver lining more often now and remember now to judge a crowded, tired class before it even begins. Oh, and turns out all those extra people were actually Lululemon employees that came to class to offer my instructor an ambassador position.

OUTFIT:

J.Crew V-necks are kind of my uniform. I have four colors and wear them to death. I picked up this grey one at the outlet in Hilton Head last weekend.

Okay and can we talk about what happened while I was getting ready this morning? After Bikram I shower and get ready in the gym at my office. It is extremely old, the machines are literally unsafe to use, and things are falling off the walls in the locker room. But it does the job and my company refuses to renovate, so I have stopped even trying. Anyway I usually use the hand dryers to dry my hair (a little trick I picked up at summer camp) but today I decide to be good and actually use a brush and hair dryer. The hair dryers in the gym look like this, so I should have been weary from the get-go:

As I was drying I noticed it smelled kind of funny and I kept finding weird gold threads in my hair. THEY WEREN’T GOLD THREADS. THEY WERE BURNT SHRIVELED HAIR. The hairdryer literally killed my hair. Reason #9087 that the gym needs to be updated. I’m keeping this picture for evidence:

Hmph.

BREAKFAST:

Today’s breakfast was a vegan version of overnight oats. That means I made it using only soy milk instead of adding in some Greek yogurt like I usually do. Into the bowl went:

  • 1/3 up raw oats (not quick cooking)
  • 3/4 cup soy milk
  • 2 TBSP chia seeds
  • 1 TBSP vanilla protein powder
  • 1/2 banana
  • A pinch of stevia

Here’s what it looked like before I put it in the fridge:

After chilling all night, I brought it to work and added a peanut flour sauce on top. (1 TBSP peanut flour, pinch stevia, pinch salt, water to thin). The chia seeds made the mixture gel up into a thin but gooey pudding. The flavor was mildly sweet and I loved the lightness of each spoonful. I’m curious to see how this holds me over in comparison to oats or greek yogurt. We shall see.

Longest. Morning. Post. Ever. Sorry about that, guess I just had lots to say. Hope you have a wonderful Friday and have great things planned for the weekend!

QUESTION:

  • Did you wake up to watch the Royal Wedding this morning?
  • What did you think of Kate’s dress??

I hate to admit that has happened to me, too… burnt hair smells terrible!

Kate’s dress was beautiful I thought she looked amazing 🙂

I didn’t have the intention of watching it but I got hooked. Her dress was timeless and elegant – nothing that I would ever choose but I think it fit the occasion.

And damaged hair is so annoying!

Your overnight oats combo sounds good! I will be interested to hear if it had staying power. I got up at 4:45 just in time to see the Queen and Kate riding to the ceremony. I loved both Kate and Pippa’s dresses. So elegant. Kate is so beautiful and appeared so calm, cool, and collected through all of the coverage I watched. I really enjoyed it! 🙂 I may need a nap later!

So sorry about your hair! My curly hair is super sensitive to hairdyers and burns/frizzes (hello Diana Ross afro!) even on the lowest setting, so I feel your pain 😦

I did get up to watch the wedding and LOVED both dresses; both girls are so stunningly gorgeous that they could’ve made trashbags look elegant. Truth be told, I did like Pippa’s dress more than Kate’s though 🙂

I woke up early to watch it…well…wake up might not be the right word – I hit my alarm and rolled back over! Sleep > strangers getting married…I figured I’d catch the recaps online! Didnt really care much for the dress though!

Your poor hair! That has happened to me before. Be careful with those dryers. They also suck your hair into the vents! I did watch the wedding. Kate’s dress was gorgeous and so classy! I love how much it resembled Grace Kelly’s dress, since I am a huge Grace Kelly fan.

I didn’t wake up to watch the royal wedding but my mom, for some odd reason, randomly woke up at 4:01 am and decided to watch it! I saw her dress (and Pippa’s!) and they were absolutely gorgeous.

Your breakfast always looks so good!

  9. April 29, 2011 11:58 am

I thought she looked stunning! So classy and beautiful! Ps what is peanut flour?

Kate’s dress looked amazing so Grace Kelly. I had a bad experience when my yoga class was crowded the other week. It’s no fun when you get in class with gigglers, SHH. haha But I agree that focusing on them is only effecting your practice.

Kate’s dress was gorgeous, as was expected! I didn’t get up early to watch the wedding, but did catch lots of updates on Twitter and Facebook! I plan to find some video recaps tonight online.
I love Target’s v-neck tshirts! I’m sure they’re not as good of quality as J Crew, but they’re cheap and I have 6 that I wear SO often! Blue, light pink, dark pink, grey, black, yellow…they match with everything! 🙂

Negative attitudes have amazing capabilities of bringing our entire day down, it’s ridiculous. I mean if you think about it, they’re just thoughts yet they can turn a good day into a horrible one so easily. Glad you were able to shift out of it. 🙂

I LOVED Kate’s dress! It was so modest and fit her perfectly. She really wore it well.

So sorry about your hair! It’s happened to me and unfortunately cutting the split ends is the only solution. If you want to avoid cutting for a little while (trust me there’s no way to fix it) do a mayo, egg, olive oil mask and put it on for 20 minutes before washing your hair. Regarding the wedding I didn’t get up because I would be dead for my job but I did see the pictures and that dress is amazing.

I would have watched it but I needed my sleep and 4am was a bit intense for me lol I loved Kate’s dress, I thought it was very pretty and suited her for the occasion. I love your outfit, so cute with the skinny jeans and flats 😀 Glad the yoga class put you in a good mood, sometimes all I need is to get going to feel better.

Glad it ended up being a great class! I love that about yoga–how once you start, outside distractions can (usually!) melt away.

    Bummer about your hair 😦

  16. April 29, 2011 2:27 pm

I woke up early, but to run. I have absolutely no interest in the Royal Wedding..
Glad to hear about all the positive things that happened to you today.. Other then the hair… So these pictures are done at the work gym? Where is the nice looking gym that you go to?
    cheers

I woke up early, but not on purpose. Ended up watching the wedding though and I thought Kate looked stunning. (William and Harry didn’t look too bad either.) That is great you were able to turn negatives into positives. It changes everything!

Ok. I am sorry but your story was hilarious!! Little gold threads?? I can’t stop laughing 🙂 That’s awful though! I LOVED Kates dress ❤ I think V necks are an awesome staple. I love banana republic V's!

  19. April 29, 2011 5:47 pm

I got up to watch it at 4:15 and I’m about to fall over right now! I loved her dress too. My Mom said it looks just like my grandmother’s wedding dress. I need to go look for some pictures to see if she’s right. And ugh, I’d be so annoyed if my hair burned like that! Sometimes mine’ll do that with hotel dryers. I’ve never actually SEEN burned hair, but you can smell it. Gross, sorry!

I LOVED Kate’s dress! It was simple but elegant:)

  21. April 30, 2011 6:53 am

hey! I didn’t wake up to watch the wedding, but I did watch some of it while I was on the treadmill at the gym (it was really the only thing on). I thought she looked pretty, but I thought the dress was a little old looking for her. Maybe its just me. I know they have restrictions on what they can wear and all that…. Glad you were able to enjoy class despite the distractions. And those little hair dryers always stink! Hope you have a nice weekend
