A Vegetarian’s Plea

May 17, 2011

Dear Menu Creators, Chefs, and Catering Managers,

As vegetarians, we greatly appreciate being accommodated at parties and events. We realize it’s a hassle for you to have to create a separate meal when you are already busy cooking for a large crowd. The extra effort does not go unnoticed.

We have one request, however, and it is that you create the vegetarian dish using the same process that you create the meat entrée. That is: protein, carbohydrate, and vegetable. Most plates consist of a piece of chicken, beef, or fish along side rice or potatoes and a side of vegetables. However when the vegetarian plate is presented the protein is almost always missing. Yes we vegetarians enjoy our vegetables, but we need protein for satiety just like carnivores do.

Some great options for vegetarian protein include beans, lentils, tofu, tempeh, and eggs. A black bean and rice combo, grilled tofu, chickpeas in marinara sauce, or even a veggie burger would be an absolute delight to be served. And trust me, if we are given a complete vegetarian meal we will let you know how happy we are. We’ll probably shout in public and annoy the waitress with thank you after thank you.

If you want to take it even a step further, we’ll share the insight that many vegetarians are health conscious eaters. Not all, of course, but a good amount of us like to make smart choices about our meals. Avoiding excess oil and butter, creamy sauces, and copious amounts of cheese would make our meals that much more enjoyable.

We hope this provides greater insight into how to best serve all of your customers, and we look forward to eating healthy, protein-packed vegetarian meals in the future.

Sincerely,

Vegetarians Everywhere

Can I sign this letter (and add my family to the addressee list)? I vent about this on a regular basis! 😉

So true! I enjoy my meat eating when I dine out because I don’t usually make it at home BUT if I saw more amazing looking veggie dishes I would be so much more likely to have them because I frankly love the components of a well rounded vegetarian meal

Oh, this is perfect. I can’t even count the times where I have gone out to eat and the only vegetarian options are: small salad, or pasta primavera. LOADED with alfredo sauce.. ugh. I do (slowly) see veggie burgers making more and more of an appearance though.

    AMEN! I second this!

Why vegetarian protein is such a difficult concept, I’ll never understand…

also i would like to point out that iceberg lettuce and tomatoes DO NOT count as an entree……toppings people toppings!

Totally felt this when I was a vegetarian. I don’t know why people exclusively associate meat with protein. Come onnnnnnn!!

  9. May 17, 2011 4:52 pm

Amen. The few times I’ve been given a full meal as the vegetarian option stick out in my mind as very good meals. I’m sick of being asked how I get any protein as a vegetarian…

Um can we distribute this to restaurants nationwide?!

It’s not easy being a vegetarian… My girlfriend doesn’t eat red meat but will eat chicken, turkey, fish… And she has difficulty because she is getting sick of everything! I believe from reading your blog, your more strict with what you eat… It must be tough!

    Cheers

100 percent agree!! My family also needs to read this. haha. Obv. veggie protein is so easy to put into a meal bc I seem to do it everyday! The possibilities are endless…beans (all 500 kinds!!), tofu, temph, meatless substitutes, eggs, greek yogurt, etc. Loved this!!

I know what you mean! For Prom the group of girls I went with inexplicably wanted to go to Applebee’s (blech)! When we got there I raked my eyes hopelessly over the menu. Not only am I a vegetarian, but I’m also lactose intolerant, and that left me with one measly option – their teriyaki noodles sans chicken. They set before me the most pathetic excuse of a meal that I have ever seen – a couple of strands of cold, hard spaghetti noodles and some teriyaki smothered vegetables.

Great post ~ we’re not picky, we’d just like one good, quality vegetarian option right?! Sometimes I feel guilty for being annoyed when there are no options at all for me, but then I think wait a sec, there are alot of vegetarians and vegans out there now, so can’t a small effort be made for us so that we can enjoy a meal with our meat eating friends & family. Our friends are getting married this summer and they told me that they have not forgotten that I will need a meatless dish. I was really grateful to them for making that effort for me 🙂

Amen. This issue seriously needs to be addressed. You should send it into the opinions section of a newspaper.

I love this! 🙂 Vegetarian proteins are not expensive either—hello bulk bin! Restaurants could probably save money if they did this. lol.

Oh my goodness, I love this. And I love YOU for writing it. 🙂 I’m incredibly grateful when there are healthy vegetarian options at events, weddings, etc.

Excellent ideal! Let us not forget quinoa as an excellent source of protein. Simply calling yourself vegetarian friendly does make it so. Again… great post!

wow, I was at a work convention the last four days, i wish I could have printed this out and gave it to the catering manager!
They gave us such a hard time for being vegetarians ( my boss is one too) They got MAD when we didnt tell them soon enough and then they brought me oiley veggies and lettuce every day AFTER everyone else was done eating?….
