Exercise & Aging

February 9, 2011

Good morning! I’m happy to report that my stomach is now back to normal. Thanks for all your well wishes and tips on what to eat.

WORKOUT:

I finally got to go to Bikram this morning after missing classes last week, and it was fantastic as usual. I’ve been having an internal battle with myself during class though. I want to get deep leg and hamstring stretches in for flexibility, but sometimes I’m sore after and it’s hard to run the next day. I’ve sort of taken a middle ground – I stretch, but don’t try to push my boundaries as I would if my only goal were to improve my Bikram skills.

Oh, and check out this 90 year old yoga instructor that could kick my butt anyday. She’s trying to get in the Guinness Book of World Records as the oldest yoga teacher!

Hearing stories like this make me feel good about practicing yoga. I really think if I keep it up, I won’t have as many joint problems or ailments as I age. I’d like to think that my rigorous exercise will only help me as I get older, but I know that’s not always the case. Distance runners often have bad knees and lots of hip problems later in life. I just hope my yoga balances out the stress I’m putting on my legs. My mom tells me that older people do the elliptical because it puts less impact on their knees, but I intend on running throughout my life if I can.

  • What do you think? Is it bad to put a lot of stress on your body through running, or will it be beneficial to keep up?

OUTFIT:

Got this leopard print dress at Target a couple of years ago and kinda forgot about it. Figured I could attempt to make it cold weather appropriate.

 BREAKFAST:

Mmmm good to be back. I look forward to this bowl every morning!

  • 1/3 cup oatmeal mixed with 1 teaspoon chia seeds and cinnamon
  • 1 ripe banana – half mixed in, half on top
  • big glob of Sunflower Seed Butter

It’s Wednesday! Hope your week is flying by:)

I actually remember that Target dress because I bought the shorts with the exact same print! 🙂

My dad is an orthopedic, so he sees a LOT of older runners with serious issues. He always tells me not to run too much if I want to run forever!

Thanks for the info from a doctor! I think I’ll check my marathon of the list, then go back to shorter distances for that reason.

I love your outfit today 🙂 Where did you get your boots? What is the brand? I have been looking for a pair of black boots and I can’t seem to find anything I like..

Hope you are having a fabulous Wednesday!

Thanks! Boots are from Macys a few years ago…no idea what brand. I actually wouldn’t recommend them because they slouch down immediately and it drives me crazy!! It’s a problem with suede boots I guess.

I think countering the running with yoga is a great idea! I’ve heard the same thing about running, but I think it’s good to keep it up as we age, but not to the extreme.

That’s what I’ve heard too. So I think I will get my marathon in and then cut back….unless I get addicted!

I like your oufit, its cute and warm!
I’ve been loving yoga lately…I havent noticed any negative side effects on my running, but I also take it easy and use the yoga for light stretching instead of an intense stretch…if that makes sense! I would say that your body will tell you if some move or stretch is too much!

Yes, I agree, which is why my soreness makes me think it was a little too much!

i def think that too much running can cause harm in the future! it does put too much stress on our bones and muscles so that when we are older we can barely move!!.. so i think running is good, but in excess its not good!

I’m starting yoga tomorrow night. I’ve heard it does so many things for people, especially in regards to anti-aging, that I just can’t avoid it any longer!

I 100% agree that strength and ab work are essentially for better running, I just have a hard time fitting it in with my training! I need to be better.

i started running 5 years ago and fell in love instantly! i hope to do it for the rest of my life as well. but yeah, strength training (like yoga) is definitely a part of it. as your muscles get stronger, your form improves. at least for me, once i started working on my core my running improved heaps!

    cute outfit!!
as a personal trainer, one thing I try to emphasize to ALL runners is strength training! you want to make sure all of the ligaments and tendons stay strong especially around your patella so its super important to incorporate a lower body workout to yoour weekly routine. Your legs will greatly benefit and you will see this in your runs!

      Naomi,
Thanks for your expertise! I’m very aware of how important strength training is, but really struggle to fit it in. During race training, I feel like I use all my workout time on runs. And I also worry about my legs being sore after weight training, preventing me from a run the next day. Do you have any tips for this?

I’m like you and hopefully I will never have to stop running. Yoga is a good complement and keeps you limber! I really liked your outfit today 🙂

I love your outfit! How is the sunflower butter? I’ve always wanted to try it out.

    • February 9, 2011 8:42 pm

The sunbutter took me a while to get used to. At first the strong seed flavor and saltiness tasted strange, but when mixed in sweet oats it tastes like frostingggg:)
