Frostbite Series 12K

December 11, 2010

The little boy I babysat last night was so adorable. Aside from the fact that he is a sugar addict and I had to convince him that his Nutrigrain bar was actually apple pie so he’d stop digging into the freezer (worked like a charm), he was extremely well behaved. We watched Toy Story 3 and at the end of the movie he made me pick him up so we could dance “cheek to cheek“. For real, 2 year old? You are going to be such a stud.

I packed dinner instead of getting take out because I’m trying to be better with my food spending — hummus & laughing cow sandwich with tomato and spinach on TJ’s sprouted grain bread. I also had a bunch of steamed veggies and dug a lemon Luna Bar out of my purse. Throughout the night I also had some squares of dark chocolate, handfuls of mixed nuts, and an apple.

The little boy may have been begging for food all night, but he rejected the carrots I offered him. Ha.

*******************************

This morning I was having major deja vu when I woke up to 40 degrees and raining before my 12k race. It is a series of 5 races throughout the winter and was relatively cheap, so I wasn’t going to feel too bad about skipping one, but my body woke me up naturally and I decided that I would rather run 7.5 miles WITH people than on a treadmill by myself.

I had my standard pre-race breakfast of PB&Banana toast and coffee (as well as some triscuits) and headed to Forest Park.

The race was much bigger than I had expected! I love that the running scene in St. Louis is getting so much bigger.

The start was extremely uneventful and I wasn’t sure when to start my Garmin, but it ended up not mattering because it died halfway through. I wasn’t feeling too strong for the first couple miles and thought seriously about quitting. The fact that it started pouring at mile two didn’t help much either. But luckily I started to chat with a girl that just ran the NYC marathon and is going to school at Washington University for Public Health and that helped pass the time for a few miles.

My hamstrings started to tighten up around mile 5.5, but I pushed through and I think I finished somewhere around 1:04. That would make my average pace around 8:30, but I’ll have to check official race times. I ended up seeing some old friends at the race — a girl I danced with that now has a 3:24 marathon PR (!!) and a girl from high school that now works with my brother. So despite being soaking wet and exhausted, it was a good morning.

Very glad my mom suggested I wear a hat

When I got home I immediately took a hot shower. Then I chugged some water and foam rolled.

I’m usually not hungry after I run, but today I was starving! I reheated some of the Curried Sweet Potato soup (mmmm) and also had 2 clementines and some more Triscuits.

On the Agenda for today is :

Haircuit

Making granola to take as a gift for my company’s Holiday party tonight

Maybe 5pm Mass

Maybe get a Christmas Tree if it’s not still raining

Maybe change out of my shamrock pajama pants

Tomorrow = rest day and no alarm set! Can’t wait!

I wish there were more race opportunities for me during the winter! A hat is a must for me when running in the rain. Enjoy your day!
